Component Task: Education On Minor Disorders of Pregnancy: Constipation

These are series of information given by the midwife to assist the pregnant client/woman to gain knowledge in the prevention and management of constipation.

Aims

·         Prevent constipation as much as possible

·         Aid free bowel elimination

·         Prevent haemorrhoids

·         Prevent discomfort

·         Prevent rectal bleeding

Types

·         Individual education

·         Group education

Steps

1.        Establish rapport (refer steps)

2.      Provide privacy and ensure client assume desired position

3.      Explain to client the need to attend antenatal clinic and procedures involved

4.      Explain the possible cause of constipation to her

5.      Advice client to take adequate fruits, vegetables and high fibre in diet

6.      Encourage her drink at least 8 cups of water per day

7.       Counsel client to drink warm water on waking up from bed

8.      Counsel client not to delay the edge to defecate

9.      Counsel client to empty the bowel regularly

10.    Encourage client to walk, move or exercise daily as can tolerate

11.      Counsel not to use enema or purgative

12.    Advice client to report to the clinic in case of severe constipation

13.    Encourage client to ask questions and give appropriate answers

14.    Emphasize the need for client to adhere to information given

15.    Express appreciation of client for her cooperation

16.    Record and report all information in the Maternal and Child Health Book (Manual or Electronic)
